    Aim: To use the subtraction strip board to enhance a child's subtraction skills.

    Materials: One subtraction strip board with a set of blue and red number strips and a set of natural (or white) blank strips:



    Presentation:

    • Explain to the child that you will be working with the subtraction strip board to solve subtraction math problems.
    • Place the blue and natural strips next to the subtraction strip board.
    • The natural color strip is used hide the numbers that proceed the first number in the equation
    • The blue color strip is used to show the subtraction number (the second number of the equation)
    • Our first equation is 12-7 is shown below:



    • You can write out the equation on a small piece of paper, or you can use the equation and difference box (M19) with the wooden equations and answers.
    • The natural color strip hides the numbers 13-18 so that the number 12 shows, and the blue seven strip is the take away number.
    • Have the child count the remaining numbers to the left of the blue strip, and that is your answer.
