Updated: March 29th, 2024 The Dot Exercise is a concrete experience that aims to emphasize the process of regrouping and carrying when adding more than 9. For this exercise, the use of large numbers with 4-5 digits allows children to really witness the carrying process from right to left, consistently moving from a lower category to a higher category. If only working with 2 digit numbers, children might not notice this consistent pattern. Therefore, to engage children actively, they are asked to represent partial sums using 'dots' from left to right horizontally, in each category. Once, they are done plugging all the numbers on the grid, they regroup all units, tens, hundreds, and thousands that exceed 9 by tracing a line across 10 dots, and then reporting the latter set of '10' as one red dot in the next category, at the bottom of the column to make the process of 'carrying' obvious.
