Do you know the Montessori Hundred Board? The Hundred Board is a math material aiming to support children through their understanding of numbers 1–100. This linear counting exercise is presented to children in their second year of primary level (ages 4-5,) following the introduction of the Hundred Chain.
The material consists of a wooden frame with a 10x10 grid on a blue background. It is accompanied by 100 numbered wooden tiles, a box with a lid, and a control chart.
The Hundred Board, like the Hundred Chain, has the purpose to offer a linear representation of numbers from 1 to 100. However this time, each manipulative (the tiles) contains a numeral that children organize in a sequential fashion on the board. Gradually, children are taken from a sensorial experience to a more abstract one.
After much experience with the Hundred Board, children begin to notice patterns within the numbers which consolidate their mastery of linear counting and sense of numbers.
