Grade Two Montessori Curriculum Materials
One of the many gratifying experiences being involved with Montessori the last decade, whether as a student, parent, or teacher, is how the rest of the world has “caught up”, Hands-on learning, multi-age classrooms, long uninterrupted work cycles, we hear these concepts regularly in education now. It just so happens that a Montessori pedagogy integrates all three (and many more) and has done so for over a hundred years! The Planes of Development, showing there are common characteristics from birth to six, six to twelve, twelve to eighteen and even eighteen to twenty-four year olds, is certainly a concept those in education recognize quite clearly.
Children exhibit many new and developmentally-based characteristics, when in the second plane (6-12 year olds). One of the strongest is their thirst to absorb culture, in its broadest sense. We can joke that to a very young child there is only “now and not now”, but the second-grader understands time deeper. They can imagine wondrous things, planets and ancient Sumer, redwoods and creatures that live in dark caves. Have you found anything in this universe your 7-year old isn’t interested in? “Reading in the content areas” is the concept that children should be reading not just in isolation, but also in service to other areas of the classrooms. Nomenclature card sets, with pictures and loose labels, allow children to identify “parts of” just about anything, matching pictures to labels in an activity that is both wide-open but also presents a strong control of error.
The Grade 2 Cultural/Science Curriculum matches their characteristics with a huge array of topics, including Astronomy, Botany, Ecology, Geography, Geology, Science, and Zoology. As any quality Montessori material, they feature beautiful, hand-drawn pictures and text that does not “talk down” to children.
